Lucien Sionneau, a winemaker of the famous Château Mouton Rothschild and the son of Robert Mondavi - Timothy, jointly created and marketed a new wine. It was 1979. Two years later a box of wine from Robert Mondavi's winery reached a record price of $24,000 in an auction. This was the highest price ever paid for wine from California. In 1982 Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild began designing the label. The partners agreed to choose a Latin name for the joint venture to be easily recognized in both languages, English and French. Baron Philippe announced and gave the name "Opus", a musical expression referring to a composer's first masterpiece. Two days later, he proposed an additional word, and the "Opus One" was created. The wine made in the years 1979 and 1980 was revealed at the same time in 1984, as the first to be marketed. The "Opus One" was then considered the first best wine in America, setting the price per bottle at $50 and more. Today, Opus One prices reach several hundred dollars a bottle, and the wine is continuously recognized as one of the finest. The deep color of pomegranate, blackberries, plums, hazelnut, olive oil, cocoa, and dried cherries. The nuances of bitter chocolate, black licorice, and herbs are noticeable. A historic wine.
AOC Margaux, France
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot Château style
Palmer is deeply rooted in history and reflects the nature of his terroir. It is a style beyond fashion and trends. To experience its timelessness, there is no better way than to try. Again and again. The finesse and elegance typical of the great Margaux wines are permanent trademarks of Château Palmer. The wines are characterized by softness and silky gentleness. A perfect combination of varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a bit of Petit Verdot, creates an unusual bouquet of fruit, flowers, and spices wrapped in a fleshy and generous structure. The subtle balance between aromatic richness and powerful but ever limited tannins make the Palmer a wine of unparalleled charm, even when very young. Its character leaves us with positive impressions and emotions. Long-lasting barrel aging lends expression of the richness of the soil and reveals a wonderful character. The aging is very slow, successively from over several years up to several decades in a bottle. Your patience will be generously rewarded when you try the taste of the old vintage. The Palmer emanates a rich and complex aromatic finish, sometimes exotic but always unforgettable. History and class in the bottle.
